The title "4 Years" refers to the date on which the artist received her dreadlocks. The documentary photo series comprises six photographs and a video. The photographs are divided into three before and three after pictures, similar to weight loss or hairdressing pictures on the internet. The eleven-minute video documents the cutting of the dreadlocks as a classic performance.
During the performance, the artist shows a certain detachment through neutral facial expressions and gestures. Nevertheless, her emotion does not allow this attitude to be fully maintained. The artist's inner conflict becomes visible: a long exhalation before the first cut, shock, sadness and finally emotional emptiness. The performance ends with the first combing through of the remaining hair. Background noises such as the scissors and heavy breathing intensify the intensity of the moment. The process of cutting off the dreadlocks is done slowly to emphasise the importance of the moment.
